September 26-27, 2026: Scholars of Hispanic Stories and Histories

[Last week commenced National Hispanic Heritage Month, which like all of our commemorations during this craptastic year is particularly fraught. But they’re also occasions to better remember inspiring American histories and communities, so this week I’ve highlighted a handful of Hispanic women’s stories that can help us do just that. Leading up to this weekend tribute to scholars we should all read!]

First, I’ll note that in this May 2023 weekend post on Hemispheric Studies Scholars, I highlighted a few folks I’d also definitely want to include here: my friend Elena Lahr-Vivaz; my FSU colleague Diego Ubiera; and Felipe Fernández-Arnesto. Make sure to check out both that post and those pages of theirs to learn more about those awesome scholars!

But of course that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Here (in no particular order) are a handful more folks we should all be reading, and please add your own nominations in comments below!

Malka Older

Naida García Crespo

Julio Capó Jr.

Sergio González

And Gabe Ortiz, among many others (so nominate more, please!)

Next series starts Monday,

Ben

PS. What do you think? Hispanic scholars, stories, or histories you’d highlight?
