[Last week commenced National Hispanic Heritage Month, which like all of our commemorations during this craptastic year is particularly fraught. But they’re also occasions to better remember inspiring American histories and communities, so this week I’ll highlight a handful of Hispanic women’s stories that can help us do just that. Leading up to a weekend tribute to scholars we should all read!]
In lieu of a post of my own today, I’m going to ask you to read my awesome wife Vaughn Joy’s May 1, 2024 Review Roulette post, featuring her feminist and contextual history analysis of the groundbreaking film Salt of the Earth (1954). I don’t know of any mid-20th century cultural depictions of Mexican American women and communities that are more compelling and crucial than that film, and I hope you’ll check out Vaughn’s typically thoughtful and important take on it.
Next story tomorrow,
Ben
PS. What do you think? Hispanic histories you’d highlight?
