October 24-25, 2026: Practicing Public Scholarship: Our ASA Workshop!

[This weekend, Vaughn and I are leading a workshop entitled “Improvisation & Innovation: New Possibilities for Public Scholarship” at the American Studies Association conference in Chicago. So this week I wanted to engage with a few questions about and examples of this vital work, leading up to this weekend post with some further details about that workshop!]

First and foremost: if you’re at the American Studies Association conference and will be around and free tomorrow (Sunday) morning at 8:30, consider joining us in the Wilson Room (3rd floor of the Palmer House) for our workshop! We’ll be talking about this website (and tons of takeaways from Vaughn’s work designing, building, and maintaining it), about our respective experiences with podcasts and online writing and social media and more, and about other tips and strategies from our longstanding and evolving public scholarly careers.

After we share our thoughts and hopefully elicit some questions and collective conversation from the goup, we’ll be asking our attendees some questions to get them brainstorming their own next steps as public scholars. So if you’re not able to join us, here are quick versions of a couple of them to help you continue your own public scholarly work:

–Using the main categories of public scholarly production—podcasting, newsletters & blogs, other online writing, web design/sites, and social media—try to think of at least two different media/spaces where you could share topics, ideas, projects of yours;

–What’s a concrete next step or two that you could take, possibly to pursue those goals, but possibly just in your public scholarly journey overall (ie, could be connecting to an organization more fully, or more consistently engaging with other scholars on social media, or whatever)?

–What questions do you have for us, and/or how can we support your work and efforts, past, current/ongoing, or future?

World Series series starts Monday,

Ben

PS. What do you think? Examples of great public scholars or scholarship you’d share, including your own projects, goals, or next steps?
