July 25-26, 2026: AmericanStudying Summer Camp: College Internships

[We’re in the heart of summer now, which means for many families we’re in summer camp season. So this week I’ve highlighted a handful of AmericanStudies contexts for summer camp, leading up to this special weekend post on what my college students sons are doing with their summer vacations!]

A couple fun details that capture what the boys are up to this summer:

  1. Aidan’s boots: Aidan already worked a part-time job at a Nashville engineering company throughout the past Spring semester, working on traffic engineering projects including one focused on local sidewalks, so his summer internship at SGH in Waltham isn’t his first such job. But it’s certainly his most multilayered connection to such a job and company, and a great reflection of that is the pair of work boots that they ordered for him and that are sitting on our shoe rack as I write this post.
  2. Kyle’s spreadsheets: Kyle is continuing to work this summer (remotely) for the gig with the Campus Sustainability Office that I highlighted in this post. That has led him to research all kinds of interesting subjects, many of them connected to aspects of the University of Michigan budget. Which, in turn, has led to me looking over and seeing elaborate spreadsheets on his laptop. Definitely a detail that makes you feel like you’ve got a second (well, third if you count this AmericanStudier) working man in the family!

Next series starts Monday,

Ben

PS. What do you think? Summer camp stories you’d share or histories you’d highlight?

New follower–and what do I find but mention of SGH, which my dad worked at for 40 years and my sister worked at for about 30. Cool!

Wow! I will pass that along to Aidan!
